Founded in 1927, the Highlands Biological Foundation, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, is one of the oldest non-profit organizations on the Highlands Plateau in North Carolina. Initially created to financially support the research and educational programs of the Highlands Biological Station, the role of the Foundation has expanded to not only support the Station, Highlands Nature Center, and Highlands Botanical Garden, but also to pursue its own programming initiatives in the Highlands community. From summer programming that celebrates local biodiversity, research grants given to graduate students, to funds to support the Nature Center’s youth outreach, the Highlands Biological Foundation is deeply involved in raising awareness about conservation issues and protecting the natural world around us.

Meet Your NeighboursMeet Your Neighbours is an international photographic initiative founded by photographers Clay Bolt and Niall Benvie, which has been designed to reveal the wildlife living amongst us in an extraordinary way. These creatures and plants are vital to people: they represent the first and, for some, the only contact with wild nature we have. Yet often they are overlooked, undervalued. Meet Your Neighbours dignifies these common species by giving them celebrity treatment so that animals and plants we thought we knew reveal another side of themselves, encourage a second glance, perhaps even renewed interest. The initiative engages photographers from around the world to celebrate these animals and ask people in their communities to “go meet your neighbours”.

Backyard Naturalists is made possible through the generous support of The Eckerd Family Foundation. The Foundation provides leadership and support for innovative educational, preventative, therapeutic and rehabilitative programs for children, youth and their families.

The Foundation seeks to support the most promising and innovative ideas that provide vulnerable youth with not merely transitional services, but rather transformational opportunities helping them to reconnect with their futures. Just as importantly, all of the Foundation’s investments are evaluated against clear goals and measured by results and performance outcomes.

Our Mission

The mission of Backyard Naturalists is to inspire a lifelong appreciation of the natural world in children through educational programming that integrates science, art, and technology. The program has been developed through a partnership between The Highlands Biological Foundation and Meet Your Neighbours, an international nature photography project designed to help people to learn more about the wildlife in their own community. Backyard Naturalists is made possible through the generous support of The Eckerd Family Foundation, which provides leadership and support for innovative educational, preventative, therapeutic and rehabilitative programs for children, youth and their families.
